Simplistically, the square root of zero must be zero as any other number (positive or negative) multiplied by itself will equal a number other than zero.

With a little more detail, the square root of zero is zero because most mathematicians believe that zero is a perfect square.  There are some however than believe zero is not a perfect square if you use the following definition of a perfect square:

 "Any number that can be written as a positive integer to the power of two".
