it can be management and configuration, this depends on the storage or cluster; let's say you have an IBM, to do this you need to boot with a special CD in order to get to an application where you configure the storage, the RAID, the HDs, the fiber channel if its the case

or it can be simply the alarmistic thing, which is getting alarms when something happens on the storage: this also depends on the storage model, most probably you must have some kind of agent running on the PC where the storage is mounted.. that agent usually provides a SNMP interface or it can trigger SNMP traps to some other PC
